Accessibility Statement
Our commitment to digital accessibility
Scope of this statement
Joel Nicolay (Joel Digitals) is committed to making its website, shop and app available to as many people as possible, in line with the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, BFSG) and the underlying European Accessibility Act (EAA), which draw on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA.
This statement applies to: www.joel-digitals.de and the Joel Digitals app and shop.
Conformance status
This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content do not yet fully meet the accessibility standard. We are actively working through the site, page by page, to close these gaps.
Measures already in place
- A "skip to main content" link on every page for keyboard users
- Descriptive alt text for informative images; decorative images are hidden from screen readers
- Keyboard-operable navigation, including menus that previously only opened on mouse hover
- Language of the page correctly marked up for screen readers, and kept in sync when switching between German and English
- Accessible names (aria-label) for icon-only buttons and links, such as the cart and menu toggle
- A consistent, visible keyboard focus outline is enforced site-wide, even on components that previously suppressed it
- Reduced motion is honoured for visitors who have that preference set in their operating system
- Form fields in key flows (checkout, appointment booking, withdrawal, free tools) are programmatically linked to their labels for screen readers
- Text colour on dark backgrounds was measured against WCAG contrast formulas and corrected where it fell short, including status badges
- Heading structure was corrected across the site so screen reader users can navigate by section without skipped levels
- A checkout error that was previously invisible to every visitor, not just screen reader users, is now shown clearly
- The chat widget's open/close button, dialog and keyboard behaviour were tested directly and confirmed to work correctly, including returning keyboard focus to the chat button when closed with the Escape key
- The site was tested at a 320px viewport width in a real browser (a stricter check than 200% zoom); a real clipping bug in the shop search field was found and fixed
- The appointment date picker now behaves as a proper dialog: focus moves into it on open, Tab cannot escape it, and Escape closes it and returns focus to the button that opened it
- The checkout's final submit button now uses the legally required wording for a binding, payment-obligating order, and shows a final confirmation with the total amount before submitting
- Text spacing was tested with significantly increased line height, letter spacing and paragraph spacing; no content was cut off
- Border colours used on form fields and interactive controls were measured and corrected where they were nearly invisible against the background
- A selection control that used real radio buttons but hid them in a way that made them impossible to reach by keyboard was fixed; several custom expandable sections that only worked with a mouse now work with the keyboard as well
- All existing blog, wiki and FAQ content stored in our database was checked for images without alt text, and new safeguards automatically add alt text to any that are missing it going forward
- A number of additional unlabelled form fields were found through automated testing and fixed, including the FAQ search box and fields in the website configurator and wallet payout tools
Known limitations
Despite our best efforts, the following limitations are currently known:
- The message field in the AI chat widget (provided by a third-party service) does not yet have an accessible name beyond its placeholder text; the rest of the widget (open/close, focus handling, screen reader roles) has been tested and works correctly.
- Not every page has had its colour contrast individually re-checked after the site-wide colour fix; some older or less-visited pages may still fall short.
- Some PDF documents (e.g. invoices) are generated automatically and may not be fully tagged for screen readers.
- Images that our editors embed directly in blog posts and wiki articles through the content editor are not individually checked by us; we ask our editors to add alt text themselves.
We are working to resolve these limitations. If you encounter a barrier that isn't listed here, please let us know using the contact options below.
Feedback and contact
If you notice any content that is not accessible to you, or if you need information in an alternative format, please get in touch:
We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within a reasonable time.
Enforcement procedure
If you are not satisfied with our response to your accessibility feedback, you can contact the market surveillance authority responsible for the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) in the German state of Saarland. [Name, address and contact details of the responsible authority to be confirmed and inserted here.]
